Some 60 people took part in a crash simulation training exercise at the Portage County Regional Airport. Departments attending were: Mantua-Shalersville, Ravenna City, Ravenna Township, City of Aurora, Garrettsville-Freedom-Nelson Fire Departments, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Robinson Memorial Hospital and Metro Lifeflight!
On August 9th, 2003 the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department hosted an open house for the public to view the new fire station.Between 800 and 900 people attended this event. The Mantua-Shalersville Fire District would like to thank all those who attended and made this event possible!
The Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department recently hosted the Ohio Fire Academy's Mobile Fire Behavior Lab. This class teaches students the warning signs of a potential flashover and to become better aware and prepared for the "real" thing!Fire Departments represented (besides the MSFD) were the City of Ravenna, City of Streetsboro, Brady Lake, Brimfield, and Garrettsville-Freedom-Nelson Fire Departments.


The Portage County Water Rescue Team recently trained in ice diving
and ice rescue/cold water surface work at Mogadore Reservoir in Suffield
Township. The Portage County Water Rescue Team is a newly formed "county"
response team formed by the Portage County Fire Chiefs in a response to the
ever growing number of water related incidents in Portage County. So far the
team is made up of members from the Mantua-Shalersville, Kent, Ravenna Twp,
Suffield Twp, Brady Lake and Streetsboro Fire Departments.

Recently members of the Mantua-Shalersville, Kent, Streetsboro, Rootstown and
Suffield Fire Departments took a 40 hour Hazardous Materials Technician
Course sponsored by the Portage County Hazardous Materials Team and taught
through the Ohio Fire Academy. Course work included the proper way to contain
and control spills and leaks of hazardous materials, Personal Protective
Equipment, Decontamination of personnel and Weapons of Mass Destruction.

A, B and C shifts of the MSFD frequently perform company drills
which range from hose evolutions to company inspections.
Above, the MSFD B-shift performs ladder company operations
which included the use of ground ladders and an aerial device!
Another service provided by the Fire Department is the staffing of a
Paramedic EMS unit at all home Crestwood High School Football games!

Fire Department personnel perform a variety of station duties
during their on duty shift! Some duties include but are not
limited to: Daily Apparatus Checks, Cleaning the Fire Station,
Washing Fire Apparatus and checking equipment to make sure it is
working properly when needed for an emergency!
Mantua-Shalersville and Kent Firefighters recently completed
a Dive Rescue Two class taught by Dive Rescue International
of Colorado! This extensive 5 day class covered topics such as
underwater salvage and boat operations.
